Alberta company recovers methanol for reuse
After 30 years in the natural gas processing industry, running gas batteries and filling tanks, an Alberta man was struck by the large amount of methanol used and then disposed of by the oilpatch.
So for eight years Kevin Kjelland worked in the back yard of his home in Peers, Alta. (near Edson), devising a way to recover methanol used in gas drilling operations.

Oil industry's shift to less-toxic chemicals may prove beneficial for one chemical supplier
In the oilpatch, it’s hardly news that some of the chemicals used to treat oil and gas wells create potential hazards for the crews handling them. It’s well known that hydrochloric acid and caustic soda, for example, can do harm to human tissue, including the skin and eyes. Concern for the environment is also at play, given the chemicals are transported through and stored near public places, helping to drive an industry-wide move to less-toxic chemicals where possible, for purposes such as stimulating wells and acid-hydraulic fracturing.
